Newington Fire Department Achieves ISO Class 2 Rating
We are excited to announce that we have received an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 2 rating! We are the only fully volunteer fire department in Connecticut to achieve this prestigious recognition, and one of only two fully volunteer fire departments in New England with this rating. This accomplishment is a testament to the commitment, dedication, and professionalism of our members.
What is an ISO Rating?
The Insurance Services Office (ISO) creates ratings of fire departments based on their fire suppression capability in their communities. This rating is called the Public Protection Classification (PPC). About 45,000 fire departments across the country are assessed with a score between 1 and 10, with 1 being the best. Only about 2000 of these departments receive a distinction of class 2, or about 3% of all fire departments.
How is this determined?
To determine the PPC, ISO reviews multiple factors including:

Emergency Communications: How efficient 911 calls are received and dispatched

Fire Department: How adequate is the equipment, staffing, training, and response
​

Community Risk Reduction: Fire prevention, inspections, and public education programs
​

Water Supply: Availability of fire hydrants and water supply
How did we achieve this?
Getting a classification this high as an all-volunteer department is no easy task. It has required:​

Strong Cooperation with our community, Newington Police Department, Newington Fire Marshal's Office, the Metropolitan Water District, and the New Britain Water Department.

Continuous training by all of our members maintaining standards and continuing education programs.
